Color/Appearance: Heartwood is initially a light pinkish brown, darkening to a deeper golden brown as it ages and is exposed to light. Sapwood is typically pale yellowish and measures about 12 inches in width.
Grain/Texture: Exhibits a fine to medium texture with a close grain. Grain patterns are usually straight or slightly wavy.
Endgrain: Semiringporous; features small pores with no specific arrangement, solitary and radial multiples of 23, with occasional gum or deposits. Growth rings are distinct due to a concentration of earlywood pores, and rays are visible without magnification, while parenchyma is absent.
Rot Resistance: Heartwood is rated as moderately durable to nondurable concerning resistance to decay, and Sweet Cherry is also vulnerable to insect attacks.
Workability: Sweet Cherry is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Challenges may arise when staining due to potential blotchiness caused by its fine, close grain. It is recommended to use a sanding sealer or gel stain. The wood glues, turns, and finishes well.
Odor: Lacks a characteristic odor.

Sweet Cherry is known for displaying more color contrast than Black Cherry and tends to be slightly denser and stronger. However, the tree itself is generally smaller in size than Prunus serotina and does not yield larger lumber sizes that are available for the American species.
